Overview

At the Bloomberg Screentime 2026 summit held recently in Los Angeles, acclaimed actor and Chief Executive Officer of Artists Equity, Ben Affleck, gave an interview to Bloomberg journalist Lucas Shaw. The two delved into the current economic structure of Hollywood, business models centered on artists, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry.

"Technology itself is not evil, but we must guard against the economic logic that seeks to bypass human creators and fully automate artistic production."

Affleck pointed out that Hollywood stands at a critical crossroads; the industry urgently needs to re-examine the value chain of content creation to ensure that technological innovation does not erode the legitimate rights and interests of artists.

AI Reshaping Hollywood’s Economic Logic

Affleck believes that AI’s greatest impact on Hollywood lies in its potential for economic displacement. Traditionally, film and television production has relied on the creative labor of writers, actors, directors, and other professionals, while rapid advancements in AI have significantly lowered the cost of generative content. This shift is fundamentally shaking the existing cost-benefit model.

He emphasized that without regulation, production companies may favor using AI to generate scripts or even synthesize digital actors, thereby compressing labor budgets. This is not merely a copyright issue, but a struggle over who defines the value of "creative labor." Affleck advocates that any content using AI assistance must be clearly labeled and ensure human creators receive appropriate compensation and credit.

Furthermore, he highlighted audiences’ desire for "authenticity." Although AI can produce realistic visuals, the emotional complexity and unpredictability inherent in human performance remain core competitive advantages that technology cannot fully replicate. Protecting the status of human actors is, in essence, protecting the soul of cinematic art.

An Artist-Centric Commercial Future

Addressing the increasingly acute union disputes within the industry, Affleck proposed a shift toward a artist-centric business model. He believes that the current streaming platform model often leaves creators in a weak position, with meager royalties based on play counts failing to reflect the long-term value of their works.

  • Transparent contracts: Require platforms to disclose detailed revenue distribution data, avoiding opaque algorithmic operations.
  • Shared equity: Encourage creators to participate in long-term dividends from IP development, rather than relying solely on one-time buyouts.
  • Technology ethics code: Establish industry standards prohibiting the unauthorized use of real people’s likenesses and voices for AI training.

Affleck stated that the goal of Artists Equity is to promote a combination of legislation and industry self-discipline, ensuring that in the AI era, creators remain the respected and benefiting core segment of the industry chain. He called on major Hollywood studios and tech giants to sit down and negotiate, formulating fair human-machine collaboration guidelines, rather than allowing market free competition to lead to the gradual retreat of workers' rights.
