Overview

OpenAI has announced a significant expansion of its OpenAI Academy, introducing a new Community Trainer Program designed to decentralize AI education and bring practical skills training closer to local neighborhoods. The initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence are broadly shared by empowering individuals and organizations to teach these tools in their own communities.

Since its launch in September 2024, the Academy has facilitated over 250 events and engaged more than 4 million people with its content. This new chapter marks a strategic shift from direct provision to capacity building, focusing on preparing educators and community leaders to deliver the curriculum themselves.

Two Years of Impact and Growth

The OpenAI Academy was established with a clear mission: to help people develop the skills and confidence necessary to use AI in their everyday lives. Initially, the program focused heavily on developers and mission-driven organizations tackling local problems. Over the past two years, however, the scope has broadened significantly to include self-paced courses, practical guides, in-person workshops, and large-scale multi-site events known as AI Skills Jams.

Recent data highlights the scale of this engagement. More than 4 million people have interacted with Academy materials, ranging from software development tutorials to small business management strategies. This growth has created a diverse community of learners, including educators, nonprofit leaders, and business owners who gather to learn, practice, and share effective workflows.

"We’ve found that the most valuable part of our training is giving people dedicated time and space to try AI tools on work that matters to them."

This hands-on approach has proven essential. Participants are not just learning theoretical concepts; they are applying AI to solve immediate, real-world problems. An educator might use ChatGPT to adapt a lesson plan for different learning styles, while a small business owner might build a repeatable process for customer research using AI-driven analytics.

This month, OpenAI also introduced new Academy learning paths tailored to specific roles, including knowledge workers, developers, leaders, educators, and college students. These paths allow learners to take role-specific courses and earn course badges by passing assessments, adding a layer of credentialing to the practical skills being taught.

The Community Trainer Program

To sustain and expand this momentum, OpenAI is piloting the Community Trainer Program. This initiative addresses the logistical challenge of scaling high-quality, hands-on AI training globally by leveraging existing community networks. Instead of OpenAI directly hosting every workshop, the program prepares people and organizations to teach the material in their own locales.

Participating organizations nominate staff members to undergo rigorous training. These nominees learn the full Academy curriculum and develop the facilitation skills needed to guide practical workshops. The training covers several key competencies:

  1. Demonstrating useful AI workflows in real-time.
  2. Helping participants apply AI to their own specific tasks.
  3. Encouraging peer-to-peer learning and collaboration.
  4. Supporting participants as they evaluate the results of their AI-assisted work.

Before leading their own sessions, nominated trainers must complete a facilitation assessment to ensure they can effectively guide groups through the material. This quality control measure is designed to maintain the high standard of interaction that has characterized previous Academy events.

The primary goal is to help partner organizations—such as schools, workforce development groups, small-business networks, and community centers—build their own internal capacity to teach AI skills. Over time, OpenAI envisions a future where every community has accessible experts who can support residents as technology evolves.

Partnership-Driven Education

Community partners have been central to the Academy’s success since its inception. OpenAI collaborates with both national and local organizations to bring AI learning to the communities they serve. These partners provide trusted relationships with local populations, help recruit diverse participants, and shape programs around the specific work and problems faced by community members.

This collaborative model has already yielded successful large-scale events. For instance, the AI Skills Jam for K–12 Educators recently brought together more than 1,600 teachers, administrators, and district leaders across eight U.S. cities. Such events demonstrate the power of combining OpenAI’s technical expertise with partners’ community reach.

Recurring workshops have also been offered for various demographics, including veterans and nonprofit leaders. By tailoring content to the unique needs of these groups, the Academy ensures that AI training is relevant and immediately applicable.

The Next Phase of OpenAI Academy

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to continue developing online courses, workshops, and Academy Jams, informed by feedback from participants and partners. The Community Trainer Program will play a pivotal role in this next phase, enabling more people to lead practical AI learning in their own backyards.

The overarching goal remains consistent: to ensure more people have opportunities to practice, learn from one another, and build knowledge and confidence. As AI tools become increasingly integrated into daily life, having a supportive community network is crucial for helping individuals navigate new technologies safely and effectively.

By distributing the ability to teach, OpenAI is not just expanding its reach but also fostering a more resilient ecosystem of AI literacy. This approach ensures that as the tools evolve, there will always be someone in the community who can help others adapt and thrive.
