Overview

OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026, that it will launch a new visual ad format in ChatGPT, while expanding its ad measurement tools and partnerships. As the world's largest AI-native platform by user reach, ChatGPT now boasts over 1.2 billion weekly users. This update aims to redefine the paradigm of AI-native marketing by helping businesses connect with users as they explore ideas and make decisions, through richer visual displays.

Visual Ads: Redefining Brand Narrative Experiences

The new visual ad format will be embedded within ChatGPT's image generation process, helping users intuitively imagine how products and services fit into their daily lives. These ad images primarily showcase the inspiration, usage scenarios, or unique experiences brought by products, aiming to make it easier for users to discover new brands and understand product value.

Ads will be clearly labeled and displayed separately from the images being generated, ensuring they do not affect the quality of answers provided by ChatGPT.

The feature is scheduled to launch testing later this month in the United States, with the first batch of participating advertisers experiencing this new format first. This not only provides businesses with a new opportunity to tell brand stories through images but also brings a more immersive shopping exploration experience to consumers.

Measurement: Building a Multi-dimensional Evaluation Ecosystem

ChatGPT Ads' measurement philosophy emphasizes the integration of internal tools and third-party partner solutions. Through integration with data collaboration platforms such as Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, advertisers can more easily send conversion data from their existing systems to ChatGPT Ads, achieving a data closed loop.

Regarding attribution and partnerships, OpenAI has established collaborations with multiple industry leaders:

  • Conversion and Attribution: Supports top attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, and Northbeam, providing conversion APIs and click attribution solutions.
  • Full-funnel Measurement: Partners with Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL to provide advanced analytics services, including incremental measurement.

Early data demonstrates the platform's potential. According to DV Rockerbox data, WeightWatchers achieved a cost-per-acquisition on ChatGPT Ads that was 15.3% lower than the paid search benchmark; WorkMagic reported that 67% of incremental purchases for the health brand Dose came from entirely new customers; and Triple Whale data showed that 93% of visitors to Portland Leather coming from ChatGPT were new visitors.

Brand Safety: Precise Targeting Under Privacy Protection

Confidence stems from control over the advertising environment. OpenAI's protection mechanisms evaluate conversational context to avoid displaying ads in inappropriate situations involving emotional vulnerability or sensitive topics. Through automated review, human oversight, and continuous monitoring, the platform iteratively refines its protection measures.

To meet stricter brand presentation requirements, OpenAI has opened up the negative keyword feature to eligible advertisers. Additionally, OpenAI is conducting brand suitability assessment pilots with DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS).

"ChatGPT is creating a fundamentally different advertising environment: the context in which ads appear is determined by the conversation itself, rather than a webpage or video. We are excited to partner with OpenAI to bring independent measurement to this dynamic environment while respecting user privacy." —— Mark Zagorski, CEO of DoubleVerify

These independent partners will evaluate the implementation of brand safety standards in a controlled environment without accessing users' private conversations, thereby enhancing advertisers' confidence in their placements while protecting privacy. Currently, businesses can register to advertise at ads.openai.com, with testing officially launching in the United States this month.
