Trump Proposes Rebranding AI and Establishing an 'AI Space Force'
Critics Dismiss AI Safety Concerns as a 'Left-Wing Hoax' as Trump Appoints AI Czar to Drive Progress
Overview
Former US President Donald Trump recently posted on his Truth Social platform, proposing a rebrand of the term "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) and announcing plans to form an AI Corps akin to the Space Force. The move is seen as a fiery response to current AI safety debates and industry regulatory controversies. Trump attributed opposition voices to political rivals and pledged strong support for the industry while previewing the appointment of a High-IQ AI Czar.
Name Reshaping and Political Maneuvering
In his post, Trump pointed out that many consider the term "Artificial Intelligence" inaccurate and lacking rhetorical appeal, thus launching a poll for supporters to choose a new name from "Superior Intelligence," "Extreme Intelligence," or "Supreme Intelligence." He then went on to attack the "devastating" rhetoric against AI, calling it one of the scams manufactured by "Radical Left Democrats" aimed at undermining national development.
"I will not stand by and watch," Trump wrote. "I will cherish, help, and nurture the AI industry and watch it grow."
Although Trump did not provide evidence to support his claims regarding "data center attacks" and human-planned AI skepticism, the reality is that both parties are concerned about the energy and environmental impacts of large data centers. New York State recently became the first state to halt permitting for large data center projects.
AI Corps and Regulatory Stance
Trump announced that he would establish a new entity called the AI Corps, modeling it after the Space Force created during his first term. He also previewed the upcoming announcement of an AI "czar," emphasizing that the appointee must possess extremely high intelligence. However, he did not elaborate on the specific responsibilities of the Corps or the czár.
Previously, Trump’s AI and cryptocurrency czar, David Sacks, resigned earlier this year to serve as co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Trump’s tough stance aligns with his remarks on the golf course, indicating support for appropriate "guardrails" but opposing overregulation led by "negative forces."
Industry Reaction and Safety Debate
These comments come amid a sharply escalating debate on AI safety. A researcher's resignation—citing concerns that AI companies "sincerely believe" they could lead to human extinction by the end of this decade—drew significant attention. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei subsequently launched the "Frontier Pace" plan, which received backing from executives at OpenAI and SpaceX.
Meanwhile, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang concurred with Trump during their exchange that the current wave of anti-AI backlash is a "hoax" and insisted, "We will not let this stall." Critics argue, however, that discussions about existential risks may distract attention from the more immediate harms posed by AI.
