Amazon’s New Alexa Tablets Target iPad with AI and Full Android
A bold rebrand from Fire to Alexa, featuring Nanomatte screens and deep AI integration.
Overview
Amazon is fundamentally reshaping its hardware strategy with the introduction of the Alexa Tablet lineup. Moving away from the budget-focused Fire tablet branding that has defined its portable devices for over a decade, the company is launching a new series of premium tablets designed to compete directly with Apple’s iPad. These devices run full Android with Google Play support and are heavily integrated with Amazon’s AI ecosystem.
The launch marks a significant pivot from Amazon’s historical approach of offering low-cost hardware to drive Prime subscriptions. Instead, the new Alexa Tablets prioritize premium build quality, advanced display technology, and deep artificial intelligence integration. The lineup includes three distinct models, ranging from an 8.7-inch device for reading to a high-end 12.5-inch tablet aimed at competing with the iPad Pro.
Software and Hardware Redesign
For the first time in its history, Amazon’s new tablets run full Android rather than a forked or simplified version of the operating system. This change allows users to access the entire Google Play Store, a move that Panos Panay, Amazon’s SVP in charge of hardware and Alexa, described as a necessity rather than an option. While the devices come preloaded with Amazon applications and offer seamless access to Prime Video and the Amazon marketplace, the underlying experience is now a proper Android one.
“Google Play was a necessity, end of story.” — Panos Panay
Panay directed the engineering team to start the design process from scratch. He instructed them to ignore previous component architectures and focus entirely on creating the best possible hardware experience. This "start from zero" philosophy resulted in devices that are physically distinct from any prior Amazon tablets. The hardware specifications are competitive, featuring the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor in the top-tier model. This chip, commonly found in high-end smartphones a year ago, provides sufficient power for modern Android multitasking.
The devices ship with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and storage options of 128GB or 256GB. While these specifications may not break benchmarks against the most powerful chips on the market, they are calibrated to handle the primary use cases Amazon has identified: media consumption, reading, and AI-assisted productivity.
Display Technology and Pricing
The centerpiece of the new lineup is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, which Amazon is positioning as a direct challenger to the 13-inch iPad Pro. The device is remarkably thin at 6.5mm and weighs 550 grams. However, it is the display technology that distinguishes it from its competitors.
Amazon has partnered with Corning to develop a Nanomatte display finish for the premium model. This involves etching a unique texture directly into the glass to reduce glare while maintaining high contrast and richness. Amazon claims this method offers fewer tradeoffs in sharpness compared to similar nano-texture finishes used by other manufacturers.
Key display specifications for the 12.5-inch screen include:
- Resolution: 2800 x 1840 pixels
- Refresh Rate: Up to 120Hz
- Brightness: 500 nits
- Aspect Ratio: 3:2, optimized for side-by-side multitasking
The other two models in the lineup cater to different segments of the market. The Tablet 8 features an 8.7-inch screen and starts at $229.99, targeting readers who prefer compact devices. The Tablet 11 offers an 11-inch display starting at $329.99, aimed at general media consumers. All three devices go on sale on October 14th.
The premium 12 Pro model starts at $499, with the fully specced Nanomatte version priced at $549. This pricing structure undercuts Apple’s equivalent offerings while providing a larger screen and similar physical footprint.
AI Integration and Productivity Features
Amazon’s most ambitious addition is the deep integration of Alexa Plus, the company’s LLM-powered assistant. Unlike previous iterations of Alexa that were limited to smart home controls or simple queries, the new AI assistant is designed to be pervasive across the entire user interface. It functions similarly to Gemini on Pixel tablets or Siri on iPads.
Users can ask Alexa questions about anything displayed on the screen. The assistant will attempt to provide recommendations, find information, and facilitate purchases through Amazon.com. This transforms the tablet from a passive media consumption device into an active AI-driven portal.
To support productivity, Amazon has also released a keyboard case and a stylus. Panay expressed hope that users would utilize these accessories to treat the tablet as a secondary or even primary computer. The 3:2 aspect ratio of the large screen is specifically engineered to optimize this kind of split-screen workflow.
The software also intelligently adapts to content. When the Kindle app is launched, the display adjusts to reduce blue light for a warmer reading experience. Conversely, when comics are opened, the screen renders them with enhanced glossiness to capture artistic detail. These optimizations underscore Amazon’s focus on its core strengths in reading and video streaming.
Market Position and Outlook
This launch represents a bold departure from Amazon’s traditional hardware strategy. For years, the company focused on making the cheapest possible tablets to attract Prime members. The shift toward premium materials, advanced displays, and AI capabilities signals that Amazon is willing to invest in genuine hardware excellence.
If the Nanomatte display lives up to its promise and the AI integration proves useful rather than intrusive, these tablets could pose a serious challenge to Apple’s dominance in the mid-to-high-end tablet market. The combination of full Android freedom, aggressive pricing, and Amazon’s retail ecosystem creates a compelling alternative for consumers who currently rely on iPads.
