OpenAI Launches Legal-Specialized AI Astra: Rethinking Legal Workflows with GPT-6
Overview
OpenAI officially launched Astra for Law on September 17, 2026, an AI infrastructure purpose-built for law firms and legal tech companies. Powered by OpenAI's newest and most capable GPT-6 Astra model, combined with custom instructions, tools, and context tailored to professional legal work, it aims to transform workflows across the legal industry. API customers such as Harvey and Legora will be able to build their own products and processes on top of this foundation, while leading law firms have already provided strong endorsements based on early previews.
Core Capabilities and Legal Research Breakthroughs
Astra for Law goes beyond integrating cutting-edge models; it comes equipped with a powerful Legal Search Index and specialized legal analysis and writing instructions. This combination significantly amplifies the model's effectiveness in practice, particularly in research pathways from facts to supported answers.
- Extensive Case Law Repository: Through the legal search index, Astra for Law can retrieve over 230 million URLs of U.S. case law, statutes, court rules, and administrative decisions, updated daily.
- High-Quality Data Sources: The partnership with Free Law Project, the nonprofit behind CourtListener, provides access to a case law database covering more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedent.
- Significant Performance Gains: In Vals AI's legal research benchmark, Astra for Law achieved an overall accuracy rate of 54.0% at maximum reasoning effort, a 40% improvement over GPT-6 Astra using web search alone (38.7%).
In specific tasks, Astra for Law found 24% more relevant case citations than the baseline model on case law questions, and up to 54% more on relevant paragraph retrieval. This provides lawyers with a sturdier research foundation for evaluating disputes, formulating strategies, or reviewing transactions.
End-to-End Workflow Optimization
Beyond independent research capabilities, Astra for Law uses custom instructions to guide the model in applying research findings to client facts. It can distinguish court holdings from dicta, identify key cases that undermine arguments, and explain how contract exception clauses shift risk.
"In our early testing, we saw Astra for Law perform strongly in answering based on relevant authority, citing precisely, and providing practical advisory recommendations." —— Niko Grupen, Head of Applied Research at Harvey
This end-to-end optimization enables the model to not only "find" the law but also "apply" the law, significantly enhancing efficiency and accuracy in both litigation and transactional work.
Trust, Privacy, and Control
Given the legal industry's exceptionally high requirements for confidentiality, OpenAI is expanding its work on privacy and governance. Astra for Law provides law firms with specific controls for confidential client work, ensuring data security.
Additionally, the service supports customization through 26 new ecosystem plugins, connecting these plugins to professional tools already used by law firms such as Relativity and Clio, enabling seamless workflow integration.
Currently, Astra for Law is being made available to select law firms through Trusted Access via ChatGPT and Codex, with a subsequent rollout to the API under the model identifier gpt-6-astra-law.
